# ID Photo Maker

A Japanese passport photo is 45 × 35 mm, and a residence card photo is 40 × 30 mm. Add a photo and the face is detected and fitted to the head size and the space above the head of that standard, with guides over it. You can make the background white, and export L or 2L print sheets. The photo never leaves your browser.

## How to use

1. Drop a photo or click “Choose files”. “Try a sample” loads a drawn figure, not a person.
2. Under “Standard”, pick the use. Where a standard has more than one size, pick it under “Size”.
3. Check the detected face (green dashed), the crown and chin lines (solid) and the finished frame (black). Zoom, move and tilt until they match. The real size check lists each number against the standard.
4. To make the background white, turn on “White background”. The AI model loads the first time only (about 44 MB).
5. Export one photo to the standard size, or export an L or 2L print sheet with cut lines, and download it.

## Use cases

- Make a Japanese passport photo at the 35 × 45 mm standard size
- Make a residence card photo at 40 × 30 mm for renewal
- Prepare a 2 × 2 inch US visa photo with a white background
- Print four ID photos on one L sheet at a convenience-store printer

## What it does

### Fitted to the official numbers

Japanese passport: crown to chin 32–36 mm, space above the head 2–6 mm, centre line 15–19 mm from the left. Residence card: crown to chin 22–28 mm, space above 2–8 mm, centre line 13–17 mm. US visa: head 1 to 1 3/8 inches. The result is listed in mm under “Real size check”.

### Face detection and automatic fit

The crown and chin are estimated from the face box. The face is scaled to the standard head size and placed at the standard space above the head and centre line. When both eyes are found, the photo is levelled by the eye line.

### White background (AI)

The person is kept and everything else turns white. The AI model runs only in your browser and is loaded the first time (about 44 MB). Hair edges can be missed, so check the result.

### L and 2L print sheets

As many standard photos as fit are laid on an L (89 × 127 mm) or 2L (127 × 178 mm) sheet with cut lines. The JPEG records its resolution (300 or 600 dpi), so the printed size matches.

### The photo never leaves your device

Face detection, background removal and export run in your browser. The photo is not sent to a server or stored there. The AI models are loaded from this site.

## Capability matrix

| Feature | Support | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Japanese passport photo (45 × 35 mm, crown to chin 32–36 mm) | Supported | — |
| Residence card (Zairyu) photo (40 × 30 mm, crown to chin 22–28 mm) | Supported | The crown includes hair. It is estimated from the detected face, so it can differ from the real crown |
| Japanese driving licence photo (30 × 24 mm) | Partial | The head size has no number in the rules, so it is framed by the upper-three-quarter guide |
| Résumé photo (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare form example) | Partial | Choose a size from the form example. It is not a standard, and the head size is a guide |
| US visa photo (2 × 2 inch, head 1 to 1 3/8 inch) | Partial | The head size follows the standard. “White background” makes the background white; check the result |
| Automatic face detection and fitting to the standard size | Partial | Works best on a front-facing, clearly lit face. When no face is found, line it up by hand |
| Automatic tilt correction | Partial | Levels the photo only when both eyes are found. Otherwise rotate by hand |
| White background (AI cut-out of the person) | Partial | Everything except the person turns white. Hair edges or similar clothing colours can be missed |
| Several photos on an L or 2L sheet | Supported | — |
| Skin retouching or face reshaping | Not supported | — |
| Judging whether the receiving office will accept the photo | Not supported | The receiving office makes the final decision. Check its notes too |
| My Number Card photo | Not supported | Its official size could not be confirmed, so it is not supported |
| Taking a photo with the camera | Not supported | Opens an existing photo. Shoot it with your device camera app |

## Limits & notes

- Photos up to 50 MB and 100 megapixels can be opened.
- A photo smaller than the frame is enlarged, which softens it. Use the highest resolution you have (a warning appears when enlargement happens).
- Exports are JPEG at 300 or 600 dpi. To print, set the printer paper to L or 2L and turn off scaling (actual size). Printer menus differ by machine, including at convenience stores.
- The crown is estimated from the face box, so the real-size values are a guide. Long fringe, a hat or a turned face makes the estimate less accurate.
- Phones can open and adjust photos, but PC makes fine alignment easier to check.

## Privacy & safety

Opening, face detection, background removal and export all run inside your browser. The photo is never sent to or stored on a server. The face detection and background AI models are loaded from files included with this site.

## FAQ

### What is the correct size for a Japanese passport photo?

It is 45 mm × 35 mm. The head from crown to chin is 34 ± 2 mm, the space above the head is 4 ± 2 mm, the space below the chin is 7 ± 2 mm, and the centre line is 17 ± 2 mm from the left (Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance). Choose “Japanese passport” under Standard.

### What about the residence card photo?

It is 40 mm × 30 mm. The head from crown (including hair) to chin is 25 ± 3 mm, the space above the head is 5 ± 3 mm, and the centre line is 15 ± 2 mm from the left (Immigration Services Agency guidance).

### What about the US visa photo?

It is a 2 × 2 inch (about 5 × 5 cm) square. The head from chin to crown is 1 to 1 3/8 inches. The background must be plain white or off-white, so turn on “White background” (US State Department guidance).

### What about the driving licence and résumé photos?

A driving licence photo is 30 mm × 24 mm. The rules give no head size, so it is framed by the upper-three-quarter guide. A résumé can use a size from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare form example (36–40 mm × 24–30 mm). Neither is a numeric standard, so check what the receiving office asks for.

### Will the office accept the photo?

The receiving office makes the final decision. Check its notes, such as the date the photo was taken (within 6 months in most cases), before you submit.

### How do I print an L-size sheet at a convenience store?

Export with “Sheet: L size”, download the JPEG and print it on the store machine. Set the paper to L size and turn off scaling (actual size). The menus differ by machine, so follow the store’s instructions.

### What if no face is detected?

A placeholder frame appears in the centre. Zoom and move the photo by hand. Because the frame is a placeholder, the real size is a guide until you line the lines up with the head. Faces turned to the side, dark or very small faces are harder to detect.

### Where did the numbers come from?

The Japanese passport from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the residence card from the Immigration Services Agency, the US visa from the US State Department, the driving licence size from the Road Traffic Act rules, and the résumé from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare form example. The face position for the driving licence and résumé is a guide, not a standard.

### Is my photo sent anywhere?

No. Opening, face detection, background removal and export all happen in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
