# Word Image Extractor

List the pictures and embedded files in a Word (.docx) file, then save them one by one or together as a ZIP. Each picture is shown with where it is used (body, header or footer), and pictures that nothing uses are marked. Your file is processed only in your browser.

## How to use

1. Choose a .docx file or drop it here. “Try a sample” builds a sample Word file with pictures and an embedded workbook on your device.
2. In the list, check each picture’s look, size and file size, and where it is used: body, header or footer.
3. Pictures that nothing uses are marked “Unused”.
4. Tick what you want and press “Save selected”. One item is saved in its own format; several are packed into one ZIP. To save a single item, press “Save” on its row.
5. File names show the place, such as Body\_image1.png or Header and footer\_image1.png, and a number is added when names repeat.

## Use cases

- Pull every photo from a report at its original resolution in one go
- Save one diagram from a Word file to reuse in another document
- Check that no unused picture is left in a file before you share it outside
- Open an Excel workbook or PDF that is embedded in a Word file

## What it does

### Shows where each picture is used

Follows the relationships (rels) that point at each picture and shows whether it is used in the body, a header, a footer or a footnote. Page numbers are decided by Word’s layout and are not stored in the file, so they are not shown.

### Reads the format from the content

Identifies PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WebP, TIFF, EMF, WMF and SVG from the first bytes, not the extension. Browsers cannot draw EMF, WMF or TIFF, so those get no thumbnail; they show the format and size and can still be saved.

### Also takes embedded files

Lists the Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF files kept in word/embeddings and saves them as they are. Their contents cannot be edited here.

### Leaves the document as it is

Only reads the file; the Word document is never rewritten. Each ZIP is built fresh when you save. Against ZIP bombs, every part is checked for its unpacked size and its expansion ratio before it is taken out.

## Supported formats

### Files it reads

- .docx (Word 2007 and later)
- .docm (macro-enabled; only read, macros never run)

### What it takes out

- Pictures: PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WebP (with preview); EMF, WMF, TIFF, SVG (save only)
- Embedded files: Excel, PowerPoint, Word, PDF and others

## Capability matrix

| Feature | Support | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| List of pictures and embedded files (format, size, file size) | Supported | — |
| Where each one is used (body, header, footer) and unused detection | Supported | — |
| Save selected items one by one or as a ZIP, with place-based names | Supported | — |
| Preview of PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP and WebP | Supported | — |
| Showing EMF, WMF, TIFF and SVG | Partial | They can be saved, but the browser does not show them; only the format name is shown |
| Location by page number | Not supported | Page numbers are not stored in the file, so they cannot be known |
| Legacy .doc files and password-protected files | Not supported | Cannot be read. Save as a new format first |
| Re-compressing, converting or editing pictures | Not supported | Pictures are taken out unchanged |
| Editing the contents of embedded Excel or PowerPoint files | Not supported | Save them and open them in Office |

## Limits & notes

- Files up to 1 GB, up to 20,000 parts in a ZIP. A part is taken out only if it is up to 512 MB unpacked.
- A part that expands more than 1,000 times its compressed size is not taken out, because it may be a ZIP bomb (only parts over 1 MB are checked for this).
- The selected items together may be up to 1 GB. Previews are made for pictures up to 64 MB and 64 megapixels.
- It also works on phones, but for Word files of several hundred MB a computer is recommended.
- Pictures are taken out at their stored pixels. Page numbers in Word are not known; locations are body, and header and footer together (not told apart).

## Privacy & safety

Reading, listing, previews and building the ZIP all happen in your browser. Neither the file’s contents nor its name is ever sent to or stored on a server.

## FAQ

### How do I save all the pictures from a Word file at once?

Open the .docx, tick the pictures you want and press “Save selected”. With more than one, they are packed into a ZIP with names that show their place.

### Where are the pictures stored inside a Word file?

A .docx is a ZIP archive. Pictures are in its word/media folder, and this tool lists that folder and takes out the picture data.

### Can I get the page number of each picture?

No. Page breaks are decided by Word’s layout and are not stored in the file. The tool tells you body, or header and footer together (not told apart).

### Why does an EMF or WMF picture show no thumbnail?

Browsers cannot draw EMF or WMF, so no thumbnail is made. The format and size are shown, and the picture can still be saved. Open it in a drawing program or Office afterwards.

### Can it open .doc files or password-protected Word files?

No. Old .doc files cannot be read, and the contents of a password-protected file cannot be read either. Remove the password and save as .docx first.

### Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
