Pivot Summary

Build a cross-tab (pivot table) from an Excel or CSV table by choosing row and column fields. For example, group sales dates by month in the rows, put regions in the columns and sum the sales. The result is built in your browser and saved as .xlsx or CSV.

How to use

  1. sales_lines.xlsxdate, region, sales

    Add the sales lines

  2. Month × region sumdates grouped by month

    Choose rows, columns, value

  3. sales_lines_summary.xlsxnumbers kept as numbers

    Save the summary table

Sum sales lines into a month by region table
  1. Choose an Excel (.xlsx) or CSV file with “Choose file”. “Try with sample” loads a sales line table built on your device.

  2. Under “Row fields”, choose the columns that become rows. Date columns can be grouped by year, quarter, month, week or day.

  3. Under “Column field”, optionally choose the column whose values become column headings.

  4. Choose the “Value column” and the “Aggregate” (sum, count, average, minimum, maximum or distinct count).

  5. If needed, set a filter, a row order or the top N rows, and check the summary table and the notes (for example, cells that are not numbers). Download as Excel (.xlsx) or CSV.

What it does

Summary table from row and column fields

Choose one or more row fields and an optional column field. Each combination of values becomes one cell. Without a column field, the aggregate is shown in one column.

Dates grouped by year, quarter, month, week or day

Date columns can be grouped by year, quarter, month, week (starting Monday) or day. Dates are read as calendar dates, so the result does not depend on the device’s time zone.

Six aggregates

Sum, count, average, minimum, maximum and distinct count. Sum and average use numbers only; cells that are not numbers are left out and counted.

Row and column totals, and sorting

Add a row total (last column) and a column total (last row). Rows can be sorted by label, or by total from largest or smallest.

Filter and top N rows

Keep only chosen values from a column’s list. Top N rows (5, 10, 20, 50 or 100) are chosen by the largest row total.

Use cases

  • Turn sales lines into a table of totals by month and by region
  • Summarise survey answers into counts or shares for each item
  • Show the number of orders and the average amount for each sales rep
  • Check the largest and smallest stock or quantity for each product in one list
  • Try out a summary layout before building a pivot table in Excel

Limits & notes

  • Reads up to 100 MB and 3 million cells per file. Up to 1 million data rows; the summary table is limited to 1 million cells and Excel’s grid. Beyond that, the summary stops with an error.
  • Sums are added in exact decimal arithmetic. Averages divide the sum in floating point, as Excel does, and are rounded to 10 decimal places. A sum too large for Excel to hold exactly is saved as text.
  • The filter list shows the first 200 distinct values. Top N rows are ranked by row total and then shown in the chosen order. Totals include rows that are not shown.
  • Works on a smartphone (390 px wide), but choosing fields takes many steps, so use a PC for large tables.

Privacy & safety

Reading, summarising and building the download all happen in your browser. File contents are never sent to or stored on a server.

FAQ

How do I make a pivot table without Excel?
Add the file, then choose the row field, the optional column field, the value column and the aggregate. The summary table appears at once, built on the same idea as an Excel pivot table.
How do I get monthly totals of sales?
Under “Row fields”, choose the date column and set the grouping to “Month”. Choose the sales column as the value and “Sum” as the aggregate.
Does it work with CSV files?
Yes. CSV encodings (Shift_JIS, UTF-8 and others) are detected automatically, and digits-only cells are summed as numbers. The result can be saved as Excel or CSV, including Shift_JIS.
What happens to cells that are not numbers?
For sum, average, minimum and maximum, they are left out of the calculation and their count is shown. Count and distinct count look at filled-in cells.
How do I swap rows and columns?
This tool does not transpose tables. Use “Excel Reshape” for swapping rows and columns or converting between long and wide layouts.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The summary runs entirely in your browser, and file contents never leave your device.
