PDF To Excel

Estimates the table from the text and positions in a PDF, then writes it to Excel (.xlsx) or CSV. Ruling lines are not read; columns follow the text. Scanned PDFs with no text are not supported (run OCR first). Your PDF never leaves your device.

How to use

  1. sales.pdfPages with tables

    Add a PDF (one file)

  2. sales.pdfDrag lines to fix them

Check the frame and column lines

  3. sales.xlsx
    sales.csv

    Save as Excel or CSV

Read a table from a PDF, check the frame and column lines, then export to Excel or CSV
  1. Drop a PDF or click “Choose file”. “Try a sample” works too.

  2. The preview shows table frames and column lines on the page. Uncheck any table you do not want to export.

  3. If a column line is in the wrong place, drag it (or focus it and use the arrow keys). The result updates at once.

  4. Choose whether numbers, amounts and dates become numbers, and whether to join the tables into one sheet or use a sheet per page.

  5. Pick Excel or CSV, create the file and save it.

What it does

Tables estimated from text positions

Rows come from the height and vertical position of the text; columns from horizontal positions and the gaps between words. Ruling lines are not read, so tables without lines work as long as the text lines up.

Column lines you can fix

Drag the column lines on the preview, or focus one and use the arrow keys. The result changes at once. Choose which tables to export.

Numbers, amounts and dates as values

¥, commas, ▲ △ and negatives in brackets become numbers. yyyy/mm/dd dates become dates. Numbers with a leading zero (007) and phone numbers stay as text.

Export that does not run formulas

Text that starts with = + - or @ gets a leading ’ so a spreadsheet does not run it as a formula. Signed numbers such as -100 stay numbers.

One table across pages

When the last table of a page and the first table of the next page have their columns in the same place, they are joined into one table.

No upload

Reading the PDF, estimating the tables and writing the file all happen in your browser. The heavy work runs in a separate thread.

Use cases

  • Total the amounts of an invoice’s line items in Excel
  • Turn a list sent as PDF into a table you can sort and filter
  • Join a statement that runs over several pages into one table
  • Load the numbers of a report table as CSV without retyping them

Supported formats

Tables in PDFs with text (ruled or unruled)PartialEstimated from text positions. Accuracy depends on how the PDF was made
Reading ruling lines (drawn lines) to set columnsNot supportedRuling lines are not read. Column lines can be fixed on screen
Numbers, amounts and dates as valuesSupportedTurn it off to write the text as it was read
Manual adjustment of column boundariesSupportedDrag the column line, or use the arrow keys
Choosing which tables to exportSupported—
Joining tables across pagesPartialJoined only when the columns line up. A header repeated on the next page is included as a row
Merged cells and multi-line cellsPartialApproximate. A merged cell goes into one cell; the merge itself is not kept
Numbers that use a period as the thousands separator (1.234 meaning 1234)Not supportedNot judged. A period is read as a decimal point
Formatting, colours, fonts and bordersNot supportedOnly the values are written
FormulasNot supportedThe calculated values are written; no formulas are created
Scanned pages (no text)Not supportedNo OCR here. Add text with OCR first
Tables embedded as imagesNot supportedText inside an image cannot be read
Vertical writingNot supportedBuilt for horizontal tables
Password-protected PDFsNot supportedRemove the protection first

Limits & notes

  • Up to 100 MB and 300 pages per file. A page range makes it faster.
  • Also works on phones and tablets, but a PC is more reliable for adjusting columns and checking the Excel file.
  • About 600,000 text items per analysis, and up to 200,000 cells in the export.
  • Rows are set by vertical and columns by horizontal position, so slanted or shifted text is approximate.

Privacy & safety

Reading the PDF, estimating the tables and writing the file all happen inside your browser. Neither the PDF nor the extracted content is sent to a server.

FAQ

How do I convert a PDF table to Excel?
Drop the PDF, and once the table frames appear on the preview, click “Create file” and save the Excel (.xlsx) or CSV file. Nothing is sent; it all runs in your browser. If a column is off, drag its line on the preview.
Can a scanned PDF table be converted?
No. A scanned PDF has no text, so the table text cannot be read. Add text with OCR first, then load the file again.
Does it work on tables without ruling lines?
Yes. Ruling lines are not read. Columns come from text positions (line height and the gaps between words). If the text lines up, the table converts. Drag a column line to fix a column that is off.
Do ¥ signs, commas and negatives become numbers?
With “Read numbers, amounts and dates as numbers” on, ¥, commas, ▲ △ and negatives in brackets become numbers. With it off, the text is written as it was read, except that text starting with =, +, - or @ gets a leading apostrophe so it is not run as a formula. Numbers with a leading zero and phone numbers stay as text.
Will the CSV show garbled characters?
UTF-8 with a BOM is the format Excel most often opens correctly. For older spreadsheet programs or some systems, choose Shift_JIS. Characters that Shift_JIS cannot represent become “?”, and the screen tells you how many.
How is this different from turning PDF pages into images?
Turning pages into images keeps the table as a picture, not as Excel values. This tool reads the text of the PDF and writes each cell as a value, which suits totals and sorting.
