Mouse & Wheel Test

Test all five mouse buttons and the wheel, and automatically catch “chatter” — single clicks registering as double clicks. Double-click interval, wheel counts, polling rate (Hz) and drag breaks are measured in numbers.

Two presses of the same button closer than this are flagged as an unintended double click (chatter). Human double clicks are usually 100 ms or more apart.

No chatter detected.

Double-click test
Double-click here

Measures the time between the first and second press. Slower than the OS double-click speed means it is not recognised as a double click.

How to use

  1. Press the left, right and middle buttons and the side Back/Forward buttons inside the area above. Each press is shown on the diagram and counted.

  2. Roll the wheel up and down (and tilt left/right if supported); counts and deltas are recorded and the scroll type is detected.

  3. Double-click the “Double-click test” box to see the interval in ms and whether the browser recognised a double click.

  4. Click each button once at a time and make sure “Chatter” stays at 0. The threshold is adjustable from 20 to 200 ms.

  5. Move the mouse quickly inside the area to estimate the polling rate (Hz). In the drag test, hold a button and draw to check for breaks.

What it does

Automatic chatter detection

Two presses of the same button closer than the threshold (80 ms by default) are logged as an unintended double click, with the actual interval. Brief releases during a drag (“drag breaks”) are detected too.

All five buttons and the wheel

Press counts and last hold time for left, middle, right, back and forward; wheel counts in four directions with deltaY/deltaX and deltaMode, plus notched vs smooth detection.

Polling rate estimate

Uses raw pointer events (pointerrawupdate) in Chromium and coalesced events elsewhere to estimate how often the mouse reports, in Hz, and shows the nearest standard rate such as 125, 500 or 1000 Hz.

A safe test area

Inside the area, the context menu, back/forward navigation, middle-click autoscroll and wheel page scrolling are suppressed, so you can test without leaving the page.

Pen and touch data

Shows pointer type (mouse, pen, touch), pressure, tilt, twist and contact size.

Use cases

  • Find out why single clicks turn into double clicks (chatter)
  • Verify a gaming mouse really reports at its configured polling rate (e.g. 1000 Hz)
  • Check whether side buttons and tilt wheels reach the browser
  • Investigate files dropping mid-drag — is the button wearing out?
  • Confirm that pen pressure and tilt reach the browser

Limits & notes

  • Buttons remapped in vendor software are reported as whatever they are mapped to.
  • On Mac, Ctrl+click may be reported as a right click.
  • Polling rate is measured only while the mouse keeps moving and may read low under browser or OS load.
  • Scroll type detection is inferred from the values received and can change with driver settings.

Privacy & safety

Mouse activity is only counted on this page — nothing is stored or sent, and results disappear when you close the page.

FAQ

My mouse double-clicks by itself. Is it broken?
A worn switch can cause chatter. Click each button once at a time here and watch the “Chatter” count. If it increases, the switch is likely failing. An OS double-click speed setting will not show up as chatter.
The polling rate reads lower than my setting
The browser can only time the events it receives from the OS, so readings can be low. Chrome and Edge use raw events and are more accurate. Keep moving the mouse in fast circles while measuring.
Won’t Back/Forward navigate away?
Navigation is suppressed inside the test area, so you can test safely. Outside the area they work as usual.
What is the difference between notched and smooth?
A notched wheel clicks step by step and sends fixed-size deltas. Touchpads and free-spinning wheels send many small values, which are reported as smooth.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted on this page only and never stored or sent.
