Make a video smaller by choosing a quality level, compare, then save
  1. Drop a video, or click “Choose file”.

  2. Choose a quality preset (High, Medium or Small). The resolution and bitrates below can be changed one by one.

  3. Optionally choose a codec and format. Only the ones this browser can write (H.264 MP4, VP9 or AV1 WebM) are listed.

  4. Click “Compress”, play the result to check the size and picture, then save.

What it does

High, Medium and Small presets

One choice sets the resolution limit and the video and audio bitrates. Start with Medium if you are unsure.

Resolution, frame rate and bitrate separately

Cap the short side (1080p, 720p or 480p), and set the frame rate and the video and audio bitrates yourself.

Warns when the result is larger

If the compressed file is larger than the original, keeping the original is recommended.

Compare before you save

Plays the original and the result side by side, and shows size, resolution and bitrate.

Processed only on your device

The video is read and converted by your browser in order, never sent elsewhere. You can stop part way.

Use cases

  • Make a phone video small enough to attach to an email or chat
  • Lower the resolution to 720p or 480p to fit an upload form
  • Keep old videos in less storage by compressing them
  • Lower the audio to 96 kbps before sharing to make the whole file lighter

Limits & notes

  • Up to 2 GB and 4 hours per file on a PC. Phones: 300 MB and 1 hour (the output has the same limit).
  • The output is held in memory, so a large video can fail when the device is short of memory.
  • Processing time depends on the device and can be several times the length of the video.
  • Only the first audio track is used; subtitles and chapters are not kept.

Privacy & safety

Reading, compressing and saving all happen in your browser. The file is never sent to a server.

FAQ

Which quality should I choose to make a video smaller?
Try Medium first (short side 720 px, video 2,500 kbps). Too much compression makes the picture soft, so play the result before you save.
How much quality is lost when compressing?
Quality depends on the resolution and the bitrate. Videos with a lot of motion look rougher at the same settings.
Can I keep MOV or MKV and make it smaller?
MOV and MKV can be read, but the output is MP4 (H.264) or WebM (VP9 or AV1).
How do I make a video fit an email attachment?
To fit a set size such as 25 MB, use “Video under a target size”, which calculates the bitrate for you.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is processed in your browser and is never sent to a server.
Why is H.264 not listed?
Writing H.264 is not available in every browser or device. Choose VP9 (WebM), or try Chrome or Edge.

Video Trim and Join

To keep only part of a video, set the start and end on the timeline and press “Add this part”. Put the parts in any order and save them as one video. Videos of the same format keep their quality.

Video Converter, Rotate and Crop

To change only the container, the picture and sound are copied as they are, so the quality stays the same and it is quick. MP4 and MOV can store the rotation without changing the picture. To make a wide video vertical (9:16), fit it with a blurred background or black bars. Your file is never uploaded.

No upload

Video Target Size

To bring a video close to a set size, choose the video and a target (8, 10, 25, 50 or 100 MB, or a custom size). The bitrate is calculated from the target, and if the result is over, it is lowered and tried again. The file is never uploaded.

No upload

Audio Converter and Video Audio Extractor

To get just the sound from a video, choose the video and an output format (MP3, M4A, WAV, Opus or FLAC). If the source audio is AAC, M4A is written without re-encoding, so the quality does not change. Your file is never uploaded.

GIF Maker

To make a GIF from part of a video, choose “From video”, set the start and end, pick a frame rate and size, and press “Make the GIF”. To join several images, choose “From images”. You can check the GIF in a preview before you save it.
