How to use
Choose what to record with the switch at the top: Screen, Camera, Screen + camera, or Audio only.
In the settings, pick microphone on/off and device, format, quality, frame rate, countdown and time limit. “Check microphone level” lets you test the volume first.
Start with “Test recording (5 s)” to check picture, sound and format. Then click “Start recording” and pick the screen, window or tab to share in the browser prompt.
While recording you can pause, resume or stop. The browser’s “Stop sharing” button also ends the recording. With screen + camera you can move and resize the overlay while recording.
After you stop, a preview appears under “Recordings”. Click “Save” to write the file, “Delete” to discard it, or “Record again” to retry.
What it does
Four sources and a camera overlay
Switch between screen (whole screen, window or tab), camera, screen + camera and audio only. Screen + camera is composited on a canvas in your browser; the overlay’s corner, size and circle / rounded shape can be changed even while recording.
Mic and tab audio mixed
The microphone and — where the browser provides it — tab or system audio are mixed into one track with Web Audio. An input level meter shows before and during recording, and the mic can be switched on/off mid-recording.
Only formats that will work
The tool asks the browser with MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported and lists only the formats it can really record (WebM VP9 / VP8, MP4, and Opus / AAC for audio), so you never pick a format that fails.
Seekable WebM
The WebM that Chrome writes has no length information, so you cannot jump around with the seek bar. The recorded duration is added to the WebM header so both the preview and the saved file show their length and seek more easily.
Safety while recording
A REC badge and the tab title make recording obvious. Elapsed time excludes pauses; there is a time limit (5–60 min), a memory-protection stop at 2 GB, and a warning if you try to leave with unsaved recordings.
Size estimate and test recording
From your quality and time settings it shows the approximate size per minute and at the time limit. A 5-second test recording checks picture, sound and format before the real take.
Use cases
- Record a software walkthrough for a manual or hand-over document
- Share a bug reproduction with the screen and a voice explanation
- Make tutorials or online lessons with your face in a corner overlay
- Record a voice memo or your side of a meeting
- Check screen sharing, camera and microphone input before a web meeting or stream
Capability matrix
| Feature | Support | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Record a screen, window or tab | Partial | Desktop Chrome / Edge / Firefox / Safari (Mac). Safari and Chrome on iPhone and many Android browsers do not support the screen-sharing API, so they cannot record the screen (at the time of writing) |
| Camera-only and audio-only recording | Supported | Also on mobile browsers (format depends on the browser) |
| Screen + camera overlay (position, size, circle / rounded) | Supported | Composited output is at most 1920×1080; larger screens are scaled down |
| Microphone recording with level meter | Supported | Mid-recording on/off works only if the mic was on at the start |
| Tab / system audio | Partial | Chrome / Edge only: tick “Also share tab audio” when sharing a tab (works on Mac too). System audio of a whole screen or window is mainly available on Windows and not on a Mac. Firefox and Safari provide neither tab nor system audio — only the mic is recorded |
| Mix microphone and tab audio | Supported | Only when tab / system audio is available |
| Save as WebM (VP9 / VP8 + Opus) | Partial | Offered in Chrome / Edge / Firefox. Safari traditionally offers MP4 only; newer versions may offer WebM (detected at run time) |
| Save as MP4 (H.264 + AAC) | Partial | Offered in Safari and recent Chrome / Edge. Firefox cannot record MP4 (at the time of writing) |
| Quality (bitrate), frame rate, countdown and time limit | Supported | Frame rate is a request; it can come out lower depending on the source and browser |
| Pause, resume, auto-finish on “Stop sharing” | Supported | — |
| Preview, save / delete several takes, record again | Supported | — |
| WebM duration fix and seeking | Partial | Chrome-style WebM gets its duration fixed. If a file cannot be fixed, the seek bar may not work |
| Converting after recording (WebM → MP4…), trimming, editing | Not supported | Too heavy to do here. If you need MP4, record in a browser that offers it |
| Cloud storage or share links | Not supported | Data never leaves your device |
| Shortcut (Alt + Shift + R) while another window is in front | Not supported | Works only while this tab is active. While recording, stop with the stop button of the shared window or the browser’s sharing bar |
Limits & notes
- Recorded data is collected in chunks of one second in the browser’s memory (RAM). Long or high-quality recordings can fail when memory runs out. Rule of thumb: 60 minutes at Standard (4 Mbps) with audio is about 1.7 GB; at High (8 Mbps) it would be about 3.4 GB, so recording stops automatically at 2 GB.
- Screen-share resolution and frame rate depend on what you share, the browser and your device. Choosing 60 fps may still give about 30 fps.
- If the shared window is resized during a screen + camera recording, the output size stays as it was at the start (extra space is black).
- Recordings disappear when you close or reload the page. Always click “Save” to write a file (you get a warning when leaving with unsaved recordings).
- DRM-protected video (e.g. streaming services) may appear black when shared.
- Time spent paused is not counted in the recording length or the time limit.
- In-app browsers (e.g. inside social apps) may block screen sharing, camera and microphone.
Privacy & safety
Screen, camera and microphone video and audio are recorded, composited and played back only inside your browser; nothing is sent to a server. Recordings live in memory and a file is written to your device only when you click “Save”. While recording, the browser itself also shows that sharing is active.
