PDF Watermark & Page Numbers

Add watermarks (text or a logo), page numbers and Bates numbers to PDFs. Japanese watermarks work and the text in the exported PDF stays selectable. Your PDFs are processed on your device and never uploaded.

How to use

  1. Drop PDFs or click “Choose files” (several allowed). “Try a sample” lets you test it right away.

  2. In the tabs on the right turn on only what you need — watermark, page numbers, Bates numbers — and set text, position, opacity and margins in mm.

  3. Enter something like 1-3, 5, odd under “Target pages” to mark only some pages. Empty means every page.

  4. The preview on the left is one page built by the same code as the export. The thumbnails let you look at other pages.

  5. Press “Export” and download the PDF. With several files, save them one by one or as a ZIP.

What it does

Japanese watermarks and numbers, embedded

Latin-only text uses the standard PDF fonts and embeds nothing. Only when a mark contains Japanese is Noto Sans JP (SIL OFL 1.1) loaded from this site, and only the characters you use are embedded. The text in the exported PDF is selectable and searchable.

Check the exported PDF itself

The preview is a one-page PDF built by the same code as the export, then drawn. Page number positions and orientation on /Rotate pages look exactly as they will in the output.

Upright on rotated and cropped pages

Placement accounts for /Rotate (0, 90, 180, 270°), MediaBox / CropBox origins that are not (0, 0), and /UserUnit. Margins are in mm, and numbers sit at the visual bottom or top with text that reads upright.

Facing pages and cover exclusion

Formats {n}, {n} / {total}, - {n} -, Page {n} of {total}, {n} ページ and your own, a start number, and leaving out the first N pages. Swapping left and right on even pages keeps numbers on the outer edge.

Bates numbers across several PDFs

Set a prefix, zero-padded digits, a start number and a suffix, and the number runs on through the files in list order (e.g. ABC-000123). Reorder files with the up and down buttons; the result shows the first and last number of each file.

Original content kept

Annotations, form fields and bookmarks stay as they are; watermarks and numbers are added as extra drawing above or below the content. A one-line Japanese watermark adds only a few KB.

Use cases

  • Put a diagonal “CONFIDENTIAL” or “DRAFT” watermark on every page of a document you send out
  • Lay your company logo faintly behind the content
  • Number pages from 1 after a cover, on the outer edge of facing pages
  • Run a Bates number such as ABC-000123 through several PDFs of a contract or evidence set

Limits & notes

  • PDFs up to 300 MB each and 100 files at once. Logo images are PNG / JPEG up to 20 MB and 36 megapixels.
  • Watermark text: up to 5 lines of 40 characters. Page number format: 60 characters. Bates prefix and suffix: 30 characters each, 1–12 digits.
  • Font size 4–400 pt, margins 0–100 mm. The page number start can be up to 999,999 and the Bates start up to 999,999,999.
  • Only when Japanese is used, the font (Noto Sans JP regular or bold, about 5.5 MB each, up to about 11 MB if both are used) is loaded the first time. Once loaded it also works offline.
  • {total} is “start number + numbered pages − 1”, i.e. the last number printed. With a cover left out it is smaller than the page count.
  • When target pages are chosen, page numbers run consecutively over them (pages 2, 4, 6 become 1, 2, 3). Turn on “Number by position in the file” to use each page’s position instead ({total} is then the file’s last page).
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.

Privacy & safety

Opening, previewing and exporting all happen in your browser; neither your PDFs, your logo nor the text you type is sent to a server. The Japanese font is served by this site itself, with no external font service. The text you enter is not sent to analytics.

FAQ

How do I add a Japanese watermark such as 社外秘 to a PDF?
Open the PDF, type the text in the “Watermark” tab (the quick-fill buttons include 社外秘), set opacity, rotation (−45° rises to the right) and position, then press “Export”. The first time Japanese is used, a font of about 5.5 MB (up to about 11 MB if bold is used as well) is loaded.
Can I still select and search the text of a watermarked PDF?
Yes. Watermarks and page numbers are written as text, not images. For Japanese, a font containing only the characters you used is embedded together with a ToUnicode map, so PDF viewers can select, search and copy it.
What happens to page numbers when I choose target pages?
They run consecutively over the chosen pages (pages 2, 4, 6 get 1, 2, 3). To make each page’s position in the file its number, turn on “Number by position in the file” in the Page numbers tab.
How do I start numbering at 1 on the page after the cover?
In the “Page numbers” tab set “Leading pages without a number” to 1 and the start number to 1. The cover gets nothing and page 2 becomes “1”. {total} in “{n} / {total}” is also the last number without the cover.
How do I put numbers on the outer edge of facing pages?
Choose a position such as bottom right and turn on “Facing pages: swap left and right on even pages”. Even pages of the file (the left-hand pages of a spread) get the number at the bottom left, so numbers sit on the outer edge once printed and bound.
What is a Bates number, and can it run through several PDFs?
It is a unique running number on every page of contracts or evidence (for example ABC-000123). Load several PDFs and the number continues through them in list order. Reorder with the up and down buttons; after export the first and last number of each file is shown.
