Word Studio

Read a .docx on a PC or phone without Word, then take the body out as text, Markdown or HTML. It offers a contents list, character counts and one-click picture extraction. The file is never uploaded, and the page layout is not reproduced.

On-device・No upload

Your files and input are processed only inside your browser on this device and are never uploaded to our servers.

Files are processed on your device and never sent anywhere. The format is detected from the content.Accepts: docx (docm and dotx also work; the old .doc format does not)Up to 100 MB per filePaste (Ctrl+V) also works

How to use

  1. Drop a .docx or click “Choose file”. Without a file, press “Try a sample”.

  2. In “View”, read the body. The contents list lets you jump to a heading, and the text is shown with tracked changes applied. Turn comments on only when you need them.

  3. Check the notices above. Headers and footers, text boxes, columns and equations are not reproduced, and elements the converter skipped are counted.

  4. In “Export”, save as text (choose the table style and blank lines), Markdown, HTML, or all pictures as a ZIP. Pictures can go in separate files, be left out or be embedded.

  5. In “Document info”, check characters with and without spaces, English words, counts of paragraphs, headings, tables and pictures, and whether tracked changes or comments exist. Use “Print” for paper.

What it does

A reflowed, readable view

Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, bold and italic, links, pictures and footnotes / endnotes are rebuilt as HTML. Comments are listed at the end only when you choose. Page breaks and similar layout are not reproduced.

Three exports plus pictures

Text with tables tab-separated (pastes into Excel) or with vertical bars; Markdown with headings, lists, tables, links and footnotes; and a single HTML file. Pictures are collected in an images folder inside a ZIP.

Counts with the rule written down

Characters with and without spaces, CJK (Han, kana, Hangul) characters and English words. The rule (one character = one Unicode code point; footnotes and comments excluded) is shown on screen, so you can see why it may differ from Word.

Nothing skipped silently

Elements the conversion library does not support are counted. Headers and footers, text boxes, equations, columns and ruby are detected in the file and reported. Ruby shows the base text only.

Safe display with no external requests

The result keeps only allowed elements and attributes. Scripts, event attributes, javascript: and other unsafe links and external picture URLs are disabled, and exported HTML carries a policy that forbids network access. Macros in a docm are never run.

Use cases

  • Read a .docx you received on a computer or phone without Word
  • Move only the body text of a document into another app as text or Markdown
  • Extract all pictures of a document in their original format
  • Check the character count (with or without spaces) and heading structure before submitting
  • Check whether tracked changes or comments are still in a file before you share it

Supported formats

Read

.docx (Word 2007 and later).docm (macro-enabled: macros are not run, only the body is read).dotx / .dotm (templates)

Export

.txt (plain text).md (Markdown; pictures in an images folder in a ZIP).html (pictures embedded, or in an images folder in a ZIP)All pictures (ZIP, original format)

Capability matrix

FeatureSupportNotes
View body text, headings, lists, tables, formatting, links, pictures and footnotes / endnotesSupported—
Numbered lists and numbered headings (3. 4. / 1.1 / (a) / ①)PartialNumbers are recomputed from numbering.xml the way Word shows them. Digits, letters, Roman numerals, kanji numerals and circled numbers work; other formats fall back to plain digits (counted on screen). The view shows labels as text, and Markdown makes a list only for “3.” style labels
Heading detection (Heading 1, Title, outline levels)PartialDecided from the style name (including Japanese names) and the style’s outline level (following basedOn). An outline level set directly on a paragraph does not make it a heading
Export to text, Markdown and HTML; extract all picturesSupportedMarkdown cannot express merged table cells, and a nested table becomes text inside its cell
Character counts, paragraph counts, contents list, presence of tracked changes and commentsSupported—
Tracked changesPartialShows the text after changes are applied (deleted text does not appear). The history itself cannot be shown or cleaned
CommentsPartialListed at the end only when you turn them on. The highlighted range in the body is not reproduced
Ruby (furigana)PartialThe base text is shown, the readings are not
Text boxes, shapes, equations, charts, SmartArtPartialText-box text appears inside the body but not at its position. Shapes, equations, charts and SmartArt are not shown
Page breaks, columns, headers / footers, margins and fonts as laid outNot supportedThe layout is not reproduced faithfully
Showing EMF, WMF, TIFF and similar picturesPartialNot shown on screen or embedded in HTML. The pictures ZIP and the separate-files exports keep them in the original format
Editing and saving back to .docxNot supportedRead-only. Edit in Word or a similar app
Converting to PDFNot supportedUse “Print” and the browser’s “Save as PDF” (the layout is simple)
Legacy .doc and password-protected (encrypted) documentsNot supportedCannot be opened. Save as .docx in Word or remove the password first
Running macrosNot supportedFor docm only the body is read; macros are never run

Limits & notes

  • Files up to 100 MB; up to 1 GB in total after unpacking, up to 20,000 parts, up to 150 MB for the body XML after unpacking and up to 400 levels of element nesting. The unpacked size is measured on what really comes out, not on what the headers claim.
  • The whole document is loaded into memory to convert it. Large documents with many pictures may not finish on devices with little memory.
  • Page layout (page breaks, columns, headers and footers, margins, shapes and text-box positions) is not reproduced, so it will not look like Word.
  • Equations, charts and SmartArt are not shown. Ruby shows the base text only, and tracked changes are shown after being applied.
  • Character counts treat one character as one Unicode code point. They are guidance and are not guaranteed to match Word’s count.

Privacy & safety

Reading, converting, displaying, exporting and preparing the print page all happen in your browser. The file, its contents and its name are never sent to or stored on a server, and pictures or link targets inside the document are never loaded automatically.

FAQ

Can I open a .docx without Word?
Yes. This tool rebuilds the body as HTML in your browser. No Office install or account is needed and the file is not uploaded. The page layout will not match Word’s, though.
What is lost when converting a docx to text or Markdown?
Text loses pictures, formatting such as bold, and link URLs, and tables become plain rows. Markdown keeps headings, lists, bold / italic, links, tables and footnotes, but not merged cells, colours, fonts or page layout.
Why does the character count differ from Word?
The counting rule is different. Only body paragraphs are counted, one character is one Unicode code point, text inside text boxes is included, and footnotes, comments, and headers and footers are excluded. The rule is written in “Document info”.
Can I see tracked changes and comments?
Tracked changes are shown as the text after applying them, with counts of insertions and deletions. Comments appear in a list at the end when you turn “Show comments” on. Accepting, rejecting or removing the history is not possible here.
Can it open old .doc files or password-protected documents?
Neither. Save a .doc as .docx with “Save As” in Word. For a password-protected file, remove the password in Word and save again. This tool does not remove passwords.
Are pictures or data sent to other sites?
No. Conversion, display and export all happen in the browser, scripts and external picture URLs are disabled, and a link only opens when you click it.
